PalkArt™ Tutorials
PalkArt 1- Grid of Hearts (33 min) Get started using PalkArt. The first half shows how to make a shape from a grid and have it contain part of an image. The second half shows how to create multiple hearts from a grid. Click HERE for the video. |
PalkArt 2- Mask with Hole (15 min) This is an introduction to the drawing tools-- how to draw a shape, change it, and use it to mask an image. It demonstrates tools used to modify a shape-- adding to it, subtracting from it, and making holes into it. Here we put photographs of people in front of the multiple hearts. Click HERE for the video. |
PalkArt 3- Colorizing Shapes (11 min) Each shape has its own color and can contain part of an image. Colorizing combines both aspects. Colorizing also helps to integrate the hearts we made into the photograph. Click HERE for the video. |
PalkArt 4- Saving Tokyo Girls (6 min) Whatever we see on the canvas can be saved either as a JPeg image or as a Ping image (with transparency) in a wide range of sizes. Here we save the completed composition of people, hearts and the photograph. Click HERE for the video. |
PalkArt 5- Parts & Dual-Shape Gradients (10 min) Combining two shapes-- making one shape dependent on the other-- creates "holes", "parts" and "gradients". By resizing either of the dependent shapes, we can alter the gradient in real time. Click HERE for the video. |
PalkArt 6- Pointillist Pict™ (7 min) In the spirit of Georges Seurat, we can reduce an image to a pattern of little dots that requires integration by the eye. Changing the dot size can vary the effect dramatically. Click HERE for the video. |
PalkArt 7- Quads (7 min) Quads are a grid design element that can make interesting patterns and abstract images from photographs. Click HERE for the video. |
PalkArt 8- Grid Snake (4 min) A "grid snake" will follow your cursor and move around the canvas-- changing form in the process. Click HERE for the video. |
PalkArt 9- A Collage of Pictures (12 min) This is a quick way to combine multiple photographs into one. Colorizing them, we can make "Warhol-like" silkscreens. Grid manipulation can give them interesting boundary shapes. Click HERE for the video. |
PalkArt 10- A Diamond Collage (11 min) Creating a diamond motif that captures and repeats the same photograph stretching the capibilities of PalkArt-- but it works. Click HERE for the video. |
PalkArt 11- Making Quilts from Grids (10 min) Analysing a quilt for basic repetitive patterns allows us to create a digital version of that quilt-- which can be easily combined with drawn or photographic images. Click HERE for the video. |
PalkArt 12- Groups (5 min) "Groups" add to your organizational skills in PalkArt. Here we deal easily with both positive and negative space. Click HERE for the video. |
PalkArt 13- Overlays, Cels & Text (15 min) Overlaying images on top of other images is the staple of traditional animation. "Cels" allow previously-created ping files with areas of transparency to be used as overlays. PalkArt will even trace shapes in overlayed pencil drawings. Text can be also be input as shapes and added to your composition. Click HERE for the video. |
PalkArt 14- PalkArt Cubism (8 min) Using artificial lighting on quad shapes containing colorized picture elements gives a cubistic effect. Click HERE for the video. |
PalkArt 15- PalkArt Lines (9 min) Tapered lines add to the selection of drawing tools. Various elements in the line can be modified after creation. Click HERE for the video. |
PalkArt 16- Shape-to-Grid & Export 3D (8 min) Drawn shapes translated to the grid and duplicated give a basis for exporting 3D shapes to 3D modeling programs. Click HERE for the video. |
PalkArt 17- The Multiple Button (24 min) The Multiple Button simplifies the cropping of composited pictures produced by the "Input Picts to Grid" button in PalkArt™. This simplifies the processes shown in tutorials 1, 9 and 10. Click HERE for details. Click HERE for the video. |
PalkArt 18- The Feather Slider (9 min) The Feather Slider creates a gradient on the outside edge of a shape. It's a simple form of the "gradient" button (#12) if all you want is an even gradient around the edge of a shape. Moving the slider to the far left removes the gradient completely. Moving to the right gives the maximum gradient. The gradients don't have to be created one at a time. It works great for "Select All" or "group" selections. Click HERE for the video. |
PalkArt 19- Animated Gif (16 min) Under the "Tools" menu, "Animated Gif" allows you to create an animated gif file from a sequence of pictures (either "jpeg" or "ping") contained in folders selected on disk. Options include setting the (1) time between frames, (2) width of the pictures, (3) steps between pictures, (4) dissolve between pictures, (5) times to repeat. Click HERE for details.
